Specializing in Working With Artists Who Pursue Sculpture Commissions
Owens has consulted to his fellow sculptors on a few substantial sculpture projects. Here’s what he had to say:
“The artists I’ve worked with are quite capable of sculpting on their own. They don’t require my assistance in that way. However, they can use some help with all the other tasks that consume their time and tend to pull them away from doing the creative work.
Do you need an adjustable easel-bench to hold your five by ten foot clay relief and turn it around? A mobile platform to hold your over life-size clay model? Do you need a fully adjustable light system? Could you use a hand with mold-making? What about transporting your molds or full-scale clay models to the foundry? Consider of all the hours spent taking professional photographs of your project in process, interacting with the client, editing your monthly reports, writing your newsletters and posting images online. What if you had assistance from someone cut from the same cloth as yourself?
Visual artists that I know tend to be “lone wolves”, but what if you did what experts in other fields eventually do? What if you concentrated your personal time on the one or two most critical things to your sculpture commission - whatever they are? What if you selected someone to help who is competent, let them earn your trust, and then let them support you and follow your lead? The process would be incremental. It would take time and a bit of money.
I ask you to sleep on the following question: What can Owens do to help you move forward?”
