Theme Parks

This photo shows the Castle at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom theme park near Orlando. It was extensively modified during Disney World’s 50th anniversary celebration. Several major contractors were required to get it all done on time. Owens was involved in fabricating that large oval-shaped object on the front of the castle and the drapery (called “swags”) hanging down from it. The oval “sign”, fabricated and installed by Entech Creative Industries, was 30 feet tall.

The drapery has a cloth-like appearance but was constructed of fiberglass reinforced plastic. The ropes and tassels were real. The vertical drapery alone was 20 feet tall.

The Entech team included over 30 people from various disciplines. Owens was responsible for sculpting the vertical and horizontal drapery. He also designed and fabricated the “weldments” that connected the drapery to the steel pole that supported the sign. It was fiberglassed and painted by others.
